Reading your prescription, in plain English
- OD / OS
- OD is your right eye, OS is your left. (You may also see OU, meaning both eyes.)
- SPH (Sphere)
- The main lens strength. A minus value means you're nearsighted (trouble seeing far); a plus value means farsighted (trouble seeing up close).
- CYL (Cylinder)
- Extra correction for astigmatism. If it's blank, you simply don't have astigmatism — that's perfectly normal.
- AXIS
- A number from 0 to 180 that gives the angle of your astigmatism correction. It only matters when there's a CYL value.
- ADD
- Extra reading power, used for progressive and reading lenses. Often blank for single-vision.
- PD (Pupillary Distance)
- The distance between the centres of your pupils, in millimetres. It lets us centre each lens correctly. Don't have it? We'll show you how to measure it.
Still unsure? Send us a photo of your prescription and we’ll handle the rest.
